“Christmas Eve” BONFIRES on the LEVEE

December 24, 2025 @ 7:00 pm

Free

Experience one of the most unique and spectacular holiday traditions in Louisiana —Bonfires on the Levee, also known as Christmas Eve Bonfires. This centuries-old celebration takes place just a short drive from New Orleans in Louisiana’s River Parishes.

Each year, in the weeks leading up to Christmas, families and friends gather atop the Mississippi River levees to build nearly 200 towering, 20-foot-high wooden bonfires. These bonfires are not only a breathtaking sight but also a way to honor our region’s rich history and cultural heritage.

The excitement of Bonfire Season in Bonfire Country builds with parades, festivals, and open houses throughout the area, culminating in the grand display on Christmas Eve. As night falls, the bonfires are lit at 7:00 PM, casting a warm glow across the levees and the Mississippi River, creating an unforgettable holiday experience for all who visit.

Visitors are encouraged to arrive early, as traffic increases throughout the evening and road closures may be in place to safely accommodate crowds. Extra travel time is recommended.

Join us out here for this one-of-a-kind celebration that lights up Louisiana’s River Parishes with holiday cheer, history, and a sense of community. It’s an experience you won’t want to miss!

Among the many families who keep this cherished tradition alive are the Mallards, whose dedication and craftsmanship reflect the heart of Bonfire Season. Year after year, their family comes together to plan, build, and construct one of the towering bonfires along the levee, carrying forward skills and traditions passed down through generations.

Their work represents the countless hours of effort, teamwork, and pride shared by families throughout the community — a true example of the passion and perseverance behind these remarkable structures.

Bonfires are located along the Mississippi River levee in St. James Parish and St. John the Baptist Parish, primarily along the East Bank and West Bank River Roads (Louisiana Highways 44 and 18). A general viewing address is provided only for the featured Blood, Sweat, and Bonfires Mallards bonfire to assist visitors (3228 Hwy 44, Garyville, LA  70051). All other bonfires are best experienced by traveling along the levee routes, where multiple structures can be viewed throughout the area. Availability of access and viewing areas may vary, and visitors should always follow posted signage and guidance from local authorities.

Viewing of the bonfires may be enjoyed by car, bicycle, or on foot along the East Bank and West Bank River Roads (Louisiana Highways 44 and 18), which serve as the primary corridors for bonfire viewing.
